Min storebror är handikappad och jag har länge varit intresserad av den mänskliga psykologin, hur personer som ses som friska och ”normala” tänker. Även hur vi ser på olika typer av människor och vad vi har för fördomar (klassiskt fall att de flesta pratar till en handikappad persons assistent istället för personen själv i fråga). Fotografi kan skapa samma fördomar, genom att fokusera på mannen och hur mannen ofta framställs inom media har jag velat göra något mer subtilt och frågeställande, porträttera män på ett sätt vi inte är vana att se mannen. På så vis dra paralleller till bl.a. autism och homosexualitet. Du som åskådare vet inget om personerna, inte ens deras fullständiga namn, du är fri att använda dina fördomar för att skapa en mening. Ingen av deras blickar möter dig vilket gör det ännu lättare att skapa en helt subjektiv uppfattning.
My aim was to create a body of work that challenged and questioned the male portrait. Built up partly from the writing by Laura Mulvey in Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. I’m trying to get the viewer to question the role of the model and phallocentrism based on the way he is posing. I’m grown up besides my handicapped brother and the way people are looking at him, based on his looks and their prejudice, has caught my interest. Therefore I wanted to question the photograph and different ways of seeing by using average male youth portrayed in strange poses. With very simple portraits create this strange atmosphere in the photograph that will raise the questions of whether the model could be gay and/or autistic. My aim was to create minimalistic portraits with a somehow dark undertone to them. The way you choose to read into the project is then based upon your the clichés you’re trapped in.
The project is made as a book with introduction written by Gareth Longstaff. The book is ready for print but not published and we’ll see what happens.
